General Practice
A thriving international firm, McGuireWoods still treasures its Charlottesville roots and continues to serve the area more than 175 years after its founding. Lawyers based in this office advise clients in more than 40 service areas, with a focus on private wealth services, corporate services, business acquisitions and investment matters, litigation and immigration.

Our lawyers are active in the local business community, and many also maintain strong national and international practices within client-focused industry groups. Our local experience serves as a conduit to the broader national and international resources of a firm with more than 1,000 lawyers in 23 offices in the United States, United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.

Central Virginia is home to a significant number of high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, businesses, family offices, private equity funds and investment advisors. McGuireWoods has responded by providing a full line of capital markets, trusts and estates, and merger and acquisition services. Our Charlottesville lawyers have authored or coauthored seven books on estate planning, numerous articles in corporate and investment trade publications and frequently speak at industry association conferences.

Charlottesville also offers the full spectrum of corporate, intellectual property, securities, technology, data privacy and security, and tax services to our early-stage and emerging-growth clients and venture investors. The firm’s immigration practice is co-chaired from this office, and includes securing nonimmigrant visas, employment-based permanent resident visas and advising on I-9 and immigration compliance matters.

As well, lawyers based here serve a large number of nonprofit organizations, and water and industrial development authorities based in and around the city. Our services to these clients include matters relating to corporate governance and compliance, the Freedom of Information Act, municipal finance and tax.

Our nationally recognized litigation experience is both broad and industry-focused. We handle high-stakes litigation across sectors, including energy, commercial, fiduciary, products and consumer goods, transportation, and labor and employment. Among the Charlottesville trial lawyers are several who focus on products liability, with particular depth in food safety litigation. Our food safety litigators have coauthored a prominent treatise on the subject, Food Safety Law (Law Journal Press, 2010). This team regularly counsels and defends Fortune 100 companies against lawsuits, including class actions and multidistrict litigation stemming from food safety and labeling issues. Co-leadership of the firm’s education practice is located here, and we advise national businesses, higher-education institutions and school boards on a variety of employment and regulatory compliance matters.

Given the state’s rich natural resources, the Charlottesville office is a key link to McGuireWoods’ presence in the traditional and alternative energy industry, and has been engaged in a number of high-stakes, high-profile litigation matters in the natural gas, coal, coal-bed methane gas, transmission and transportation, pipeline, cogeneration, alternative energy, and utility sectors. Our business and litigation lawyers collaborate in many areas related to energy and climate change, supply chain and resource management, and sustainability.

Lawyers and staff are committed to McGuireWoods’ core value of service and demonstrate it through their involvement in more than 30 local civic, economic development and nonprofit organizations. Our long tradition of service to the University of Virginia includes roles with the Board of Visitors, Board of Managers, Alumni Association and Law Foundation and other UVA-related foundations.
