General Practice
From this major international business hub, McGuireWoods’ more than 115 Chicago-based lawyers serve the entire metropolitan area and beyond. A crossroads for every type of commerce, “The City of the Big Shoulders” is home to the firm’s third largest full-service office and affords a gateway to everything our firm has to offer.
Our Chicago office is as diverse as the city itself, serving industries from healthcare and life sciences to aerospace, technology, banking, energy, and franchise and distribution. To serve our clients and other businesses in the region, Chicago’s attorneys bring a unique depth of experience in corporate finance, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, international law, and real estate. Chicago’s litigators have been recognized consistently for their work in financial services litigation, securities litigation, antitrust and trade regulation, intellectual property matters, and white collar defense. Additionally, many of our practices have been ranked by Chambers USA as among the top practices in the State of Illinois.

Chicago is also home to our nationally recognized antitrust group. The team assists clients in Illinois and throughout the country with antitrust matters on the state, federal and international levels. A January 2012 issue of Global Competition Review acknowledged our team noting the “active antitrust practice at McGuireWoods has scored a handful of headline-grabbing cases and victories over the past year or more … [including] a victory before the Supreme Court.” The team brings extensive criminal and civil antitrust experience to every matter and routinely handles antitrust issues across numerous industries, among them life sciences, consumer goods, construction, paper and chemical products, ground and marine transportation, and healthcare. The team also counsels clients regarding compliance programs, internet sales, pricing and distribution issues, and joint ventures and strategic alliances.

Leadership for six McGuireWoods’ departments or industry teams also reside in Chicago and respectively represent healthcare, corporate mergers and acquisitions, labor and employment, data privacy and security, technology and outsourcing, and private equity. In addition to representing area companies and institutions, many of the Chicago lawyers maintain practices that are regional, national and international in scope, all backed by a firm with more than 1,000 lawyers in 23 offices.

Additional resources in Chicago are available through our full-service public affairs subsidiary — McGuireWoods Consulting — which offers federal, state and local government relations; strategic communications; grassroots advocacy; and infrastructure and economic development services. The more than 50 McGuireWoods Consulting public affairs professionals are located in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and in Europe.

Demonstrating the firm’s commitment to McGuireWoods’ core value of service to our clients and the communities in which we live and work, Chicago-based lawyers and staff have served in leadership roles and as volunteers in local organizations such as the American Diabetes Association, the Institute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Foundation, Voices for Illinois Children, Chicago Catalyst Charter Schools, Saint Anthony Hospital Foundation, Rebuilding Together, i.c.stars, the Chicago Loop Alliance, and all of the major legal associations.
